Magic Carpet
From Editable Codex
A Magic Carpet is a superior way to move around in Britannia. Apart from the high mountains and wild seas, no other terrain can block the path, and the traveler is secure from the poisonous swamps.
The Magic Carpet was brought to Britannia by Monsieur Loubet, and sold to the mage Bandaii. Bandaii gave it to Lord British as a gift.
The carpet first appeared in Lord British's private chamber at Castle Britannia, where the Avatar found it in Ultima V.
The carpet re-appeared again in Ultima VII. Rudyom had gained possession of it in the meantime, but in his madness had forgotten how to use it, so he had lent it to an adventurer. Gaining permission from Rudyom, the Avatar found the carpet at the entrance of dungeon Shame.
[edit] Trivia
- The carpet is a real luxury in Ultima VII. It even has seats!
- You can travel over rough seas in Ultima V with the carpet, but sustain damage while doing so. All other terrain except mountains can be flown over.
- You can travel over everything in Ultima VII with the carpet, unless it's a building two stories or more high! Mountains pose no problems, however.
- It's possible to possess more than one Magic Carpet in Ultima V. Pick it up, then climb the ladder in Lord British's bedroom, then climb down. A second carpet should have appeared. Be warned that doing this will cause his magically-locked bedroom door to appear too!
- In Ultima V the carpet is protected by a magically locked door. You either need a Skull Key to enter, or you can simply use a cannon to blow the door in. Be warned that using a cannon will turn all the guards hostile until you leave the castle!
- The carpet is a plot critical item in the original Ultima V: without it, one cannot get the Scepter.
- In Ultima V, if Blackthorne's guards capture the party while they ride the carpet, if you don't give him the Mantra of Honesty a party member will be executed (not dead...cut in halves and removed permanently from the party with all items lost) and the party released to prison - without the Carpet. You need to go back to get it again.
