Serpent Jawbone
From Editable Codex
The Serpent Jawbone is a very useful item on the Serpent Isle. The Jawbone enables the Avatar to use the Serpent Gates, which lead to the Dark Path in the Void. From there, any other Serpent Gate could be used to exit, covering large distances in no time. It is the only way to travel to several locations (like Monk Isle or the Shrine of Balance).
The Avatar acquired the Jawbone from Erstam the mage. Erstam, after admitting to possess it, wants the avatar to retive a egg of a Phoenix for him, so that he could begin his experiments of creating life. Having acquired the egg, and having helped Erstam to create Boydon, a Frankenstein-like creature, Erstam handed the key for the shed over to the Avatar. In the shed, the Jawbone was found.
[edit] Serpent Teeth
The Jawbone alone however, is useless without the Serpent Teeth. Each gate would only become unlocked with the fitting tooth in the Jawbone. Erstam once had a full set of teeth, but they were mostly stolen by the mages of Moonshade, who thought of it as a test. The Avatar had to find all the teeth, after Erstam gave him the last few teeth left to him.
[edit] Trivia
- The Serpent Jawbone and the teeth that had to be collected were quite a clever idea to make sure that people wouldn't skip parts of the plot, arriving in destinations where they shouldn't be yet.
- On the other hand, it is a pain to collect the teeth, since they are ridiculously small and are easily overseen.
