Stefano never had much magic power, but made up for this by offering "services" to people, who wanted special items. When he stole Columna's stockings however, a teleport storm exchanged them with the Order Blackrock Serpent. A little later, having run afoul of the Magelord one time too often, he was thrown into the Mountains of Freedom.
It was there, where he joined the Avatar, and together, they managed to break out. Later, after the Banes devastated Moonshade, he joined the Avatar again, to be protected from a Death Knight sent by Columna. Thankful for his rescue, he gave the Avatar the key to the shed with the Blackrock Serpent.
